How overlays work
What is a web overlay?
A web overlay is a transparent web page that sits on top of your video in streaming software. HockeyScore gives you a URL for your scoreboard — you paste that URL into OBS, Streamlabs, or PRISM as a browser source, and it appears on your stream as a scoreboard graphic.
Because the overlay is a live web page, it updates in real time. When you tap "Goal" in the control panel, the overlay reflects the change instantly — no manual refresh needed.
How the pieces connect
Your control panel and overlay stay in sync automatically. When you make a change in the control panel, it appears on the overlay in under a second.
Overlay URL basics
Your overlay URL is unique to each scoreboard you create. A few things to know:
- The URL renders a transparent page — only the scoreboard graphic is visible. The rest is see-through so your video shows underneath.
- It's designed for 1080p (1920x1080) or 720p (1280x720). Match the overlay size to your streaming canvas for a crisp result.
- The URL is read-only — viewers or streaming software can't modify your scoreboard through it. Control only happens through the authenticated control panel.
Which streaming software should I use?
- OBS Studio — The most popular choice for laptop/desktop streaming. Free and highly configurable.
- Streamlabs — Available on desktop and mobile. Good option if you want a simpler interface or stream from a phone.
- PRISM Live Studio — A solid mobile option for streaming directly from your phone.
